Due to the geographical location of Chamois, it has become increasingly evident that sound, economic growth and the social benefits are hampered by the constraints due to accessibility to this rural community. The distance to Chamois by road from Jefferson City is 39 miles on Highway 50 to Highway 100. The distance to Chamois from Jefferson City via Highway 94 on north side of Missouri River is 24 miles. Highway 94 offers straight roads compared to hilly and curvy roads leading into Chamois from the south.
The establishment of a regular car/passenger ferry boat service will provide many benefits to citizens and regular travelers.
Proposed Amenities and Opportunities:
By providing a centrally located scenic corridor interstate via a Missouri River Ferry Service, many attractive features occur and are listed below:
§ Alternative travel planning for visitors wishing to visit this scenic portion of the Missouri River;
§ A focal point for the Lewis and Clark bicentennial and beyond;
§ Hospital and emergency service access from Chamois to a Jefferson City facility;
§ Employee travel and development of job opportunity for citizens of Chamois and those people living in rural areas surrounding Chamois;
§ Advancement of greater community growth potential in the areas of tourism, recreation, agriculture and development;
§ A full time ferry boat operation will provide regular employment with additional jobs on construction in the primary phase and management in the long term;
§ The creation of a corridor will attract more visitors to the area thereby increasing sales of fuel, food and other goods within Chamois;
§ Extension of Katy Trail via bike route to include Chamois;
§ Tourist Attraction ( "Bed and Breakfast" Market, Wine Industry, Historical Townley Home, Historic Bank Building, Lindberg Flight to Chamois {circa.1924});
§ Possible use of ferry as an excursion boat.
